Gray Wulff

Materials needed:
Hook:  Standard dry fly hook size #10-16.
Thread:  Tan UNI thread 8/0.
Wings:  Natural deer body hair.
Tail:  Natural deer body hair.
Body:  Natural muskrat dubbing.
Hackle:  Medium dun.

Place your hook in the vise.
Start your thread.
Cut, clean, and stack a clump of deer hair.  Tie it in just behind the hook eye, with the tips extending over the hook eye.  Use 2 loose wraps to hold the clump in place, followed by a tight wrap.  You can then wrap a few wraps around just the hook shank to keep the hair from rotating around the hook shank.
Pull the tips back, and wrap several wraps of thread in front of the clump to keep the tips upright.
Trim the butt ends.
Wrap your thread tightly over the butts to hold the wings in place.
Split the clump into 2 equal sections....
...and wrap a few figure eight wraps to keep the wings separated.

Wrap 3 turns up, and 3 turns down each wing.  Just like you would wrap a parachute post.

Wrap your thread back, and prepare to tie in your tail.

Use loose wraps to tie in the tail.  If you tighten your thread down too much, it will flare.

Once you start working your way up the hook shank, you can start using progressively tighter wraps.

Trim the butt ends.

Dub some muskrat body fur onto your thread, and build up a tapered body.

Tie in your hackle.

Always trim the fibers off the bottom.  If you strip the fibers off, the hackle will rotate much easier.

Wrap your hackle forward, tie it off, and whip finish.
